In a sombre turn of events, a mosque located in Papa Ajao, Mushin, Lagos, succumbed to structural failure on Sunday, leading to the unfortunate demise of an 11-year-old child and the successful rescue of five others.

The incident occurred during prayer services, causing immediate concern and prompting swift action from local emergency services.

Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the details in an official statement. He reported that the collapse took place at the mosque situated on Yusuf Street, just off Ladipo Road, in the bustling area of Papa Ajao.

Under the direct oversight of Mr. Oke-Osanyintolu, search and rescue operations were promptly initiated.

A coordinated effort by LASEMA’s Response Team, alongside the police, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Lagos State Fire Service, ensured that those trapped were attended to with urgency.

The corpse of an 11-year-old girl was recovered by emergency responders, and rescue efforts are still ongoing to find any survivors.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and provided an update on the rescue operation. He stated, “The rescue operation is ongoing, but as I speak with you, the corpse of an 11-year-old girl has been recovered. The operation is still ongoing.”

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway. In the meantime, the focus remains on providing support to the affected families and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.
