The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) mourns the passing of one of its former presidents, Comrade Ali Ciroma, who breathed his last at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno state capital, on Tuesday, April 2.
Ciroma’s demise has cast a pall of sadness over the labor movement, as he is remembered as a dedicated activist who championed the rights of workers during his tenure.
A family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who also serves as the secretary of the Borno state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), confirmed the news of Ciroma’s passing in a statement.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of Comrade Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. The sad event occurred this evening (Tuesday, April 2) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital,” the statement read.
Ali Ciroma served as the president of the NLC from 1984 to 1988, leading the union during a crucial period in Nigeria’s labor history. His tenure was marked by relentless advocacy for the rights and welfare of workers, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and comrades.
Born into the union movement, Ciroma’s passion for labor activism began at a young age. He joined the union when he was just 17 and went on to become the president of the Rural Health Workers of Nigeria in 1960, a precursor to the Medical and Health Workers Association.
Ciroma’s legacy as a fearless advocate for workers’ rights will endure, as he leaves behind a profound impact on the labor movement in Nigeria.
